Debbie Hollis has served the NWLA region for decades, working in economic development, social services, and the nonprofit sector. She has 20+ years of experience in community volunteerism and leadership, project creation & management, and political/community engagement. As a creative professional, she is adept at innovative problem-solving and collaborating with diverse groups of people. It's time for Northwest Louisiana to elect an Independent Progressive Senator to our State Legislature.   1. This week in Louisiana history. September 21, 1779 The Battle of Baton Rouge September 21 ends British hopes of controlling the Mississippi Basin. The Spanish governor of Louisiana Bernardo de Galvez has moved upriver from New Orleans with a force of Spaniards, Frenchmen, Germans, Acadians, free blacks, Indians, and Americans. He tricks British forces under Lieut. Col. Dickson at Fort New Richmond into thinking he is preparing an attack from the east, he opens fire at dawn with a roundshot volley from the south, and the British surrender within a few hours.
  2. This week in New Orleans history. September 21, 1873. "Papa Jack" Laine is born. Born on this date in 1873, George Vital "Papa Jack" Laine was a pioneering band leader in New Orleans in the years from the Spanish-American War to World War I. He is often credited with being instrumental in the development of jazz music as his Reliance Brass Band was the first to fuse European, African and Latin music together. The earliest jazz musicians can be traced back to playing within the Reliance Brass Band or being influenced from those who had.

September 14, 1975, the Superdome continued to celebrate its grand opening, with appearances by Bob Hope, Telly Savalas, Dorothy Lamour, Karen Valentine, and Raquel Welch. "I am running for Louisiana State Senate District #20 because I have faith in our people, hope for our future, and love for our Bayou Region. As a coastal scientist, I will work to ensure continued funding for restoring our coast, protecting our homes, our businesses, and our way of life. As an educator, I will inspire hope for our schools, enacting legislation that will return respect to our classrooms. He is running for the 5th District seat in the Louisiana House of Representatives. His campaign platform focuses on improving education throughout the state, fair taxation policies, responding to the environmental crisis, and rebuilding the state's infrastructure.

  2. This week in New Orleans history. September 7, 1963 First NFL Exhibition Game in New Orleans at Tulane Stadium. An NFL double-header exhibition special is played at Tulane Stadium in the first-ever racially integrated seating event in the stadium’s history. The Cowboys defeated the Lions in game one 27-17, and the second game had the Bears defeating the Colts 14-7. Some 51,218 fans attended.

328a. Postcards from Louisiana Emerge, which is training progressive women to run for office in Louisiana. Tonight Bruce talks to Daryl Joy Walters. Shreveport. House District 3. Daryl Joy Walters is a native of Shreveport, Louisiana. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion and Philosophy from Wiley College in Marshall, Texas and a specialized certificate from Yale University’s Women’s Campaign School. Also she holds a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton, Theological Seminary in Princeton, NJ
    Outside of her academic success, Joy’s life is dedicated to being holistically involved in her community and state. Currently, she is a Democratic State Central Committee Member. She works to shape restorative justice policy from a theological aspect.
    Joy previously served five years as the Vice President of Communications to the Young Democrats of Louisiana.

  2. This week in New Orleans history. August 31 and September 1, 1969.  30,000 Attend the New Orleans Pop Festival. Two weeks after Woodstock, on Labor Day weekend of 1969's "Summer of Love", music festivals were held throughout the United States and Canada. An estimated 30,000 young people trekked to the Louisiana International Speedway in Prairieville on August 31 through September 1, 1969.
