"Civil rights in North LA. Examining African Americans' struggles for
freedom and justice in rural Louisiana during the Jim Crow and civil
rights eras, Greta de Jong illuminates the connections between the
informal strategies of resistance that black people pursued in the early
twentieth century and the mass protests that emerged in the 1950s and
1960s. <a name='more'></a> Using evidence drawn from oral histories and a wide range of
other sources, she demonstrates that rural African Americans were
politically aware and active long before civil rights organizers arrived
in the region in the 1960s to encourage voter registration and
demonstrations against segregation." "Greta de Jong is Associate
Professor at the University of Nevada, Reno. Her research focuses on the
connections between race and class and the ways that African Americans
have fought for economic as well as political rights from the end of
slavery through the twenty-first century. She is the author of<i> A Different Day: African American Struggles for Justice in Rural Louisiana, 1900-1970</i> (2002)."<br />

<li>This week in New Orleans history. On February 17, 1805,
Governor William C. C. Claiborne approved "An Act to
Incorporate the City of New Orleans" that had just been passed
by the Legislative Council of the Territory of Orleans. New
Orleans thus had its first charter seven years before
Louisiana had its first constitution, and was now officially
an American city after serving for eighty-three years as the
capital of a vast European colony in North America.

Martha Boone<div>558. We <a href="http://archive.org/download/558-martha-boone/558--Martha_Boone.mp3" target="_blank">talk</a> to urologist <a href="https://marthaboone.com/" target="_blank">Martha Boone</a> about her work at the old Charity Hospital and the books she's written about it. "<i>The Big Free</i> is Charity Hospital and it’s 1982 in New Orleans, and Charity is a big medical free-for-all. Elizabeth is one of the first women in the toughest surgery department in America. <a name='more'></a> With her pearls and her pink plaid socks, she doesn’t fit in …at first. Half the doctors who start the surgery program never finish. Nothing in her proper southern upbringing prepares Elizabeth for the violence, debauchery and intensity of inner city trauma surgery. The Big Free is filled with unforgettable characters living the best and the worst New Orleans has to offer" (<a href="https://marthaboone.com/the-big-free/" target="_blank">Boone</a>). "Dr. Martha Boone is one of the first one hundred women board certified in urology. After 23 years of education, she practiced academic urology for five years and private practice for twenty-four. She was named TOP DOC in urology in Atlanta for over a decade. Her first novel <i>The Big Free</i> fictionalizes her first six months at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Her current book, T<i>he Unfettered Urologist</i>, is nonfiction and explains the pearls of wisdom she never had time to include in a short office visit. It will be available August 15,2023. Her third book, <i>Mother Charity</i>, will be released in March of 2024 and is the sequel to The Big Free. Dr. Boone retired to write full-time and travel with her husband" (<a href="https://marthaboone.com/my-story/" target="_blank">Boone</a>).<br />

We're excited to <a href="http://archive.org/download/557-chad-adams/557--chad_adams.mp3" target="_blank">have</a> Chad Adams on the podcast to discuss his novel, <a href="https://a.co/d/dyASnrl" moz-do-not-send="true"><i>How to Walk on a Marsh</i></a>. “On his first ever hunting excursion as a young boy, James takes an uncalculated step in the delicate South Louisiana marsh that becomes the catalyst for a metaphor used by his dad which foreshadows his life: there’s an art to navigating the marshland, and the steps you take while on your journey can cause you to either sink or swim.
<a name='more'></a>
Through their many adventures together, James’ dad helps him to recognize and learn that with a respect and appreciation for the outdoors, important lessons can be found, and an unwavering bond woven full of love and admiration between father and son can be had.” “Born and raised in Southeast Louisiana, Chad Adams has a love for the outdoors that dates back to early childhood fishing trips with his dad along the state’s beautiful gulf coast. His articles about duck hunting can be found in Louisiana Sportsman” (<a href="https://www.amazon.com/How-Walk-Marsh-Chad-Adams/dp/B0BKRZQTGZ" target="_blank">Amazon</a>).<ol type="a">

This week we <a href="http://archive.org/download/555-randy-gonzales-st-malo_202401/555--Randy_Gonzales--St_Malo.mp3" target="_blank">talk</a> to Randy Gonzales about his poetry book <i>Settling
St. Malo</i>. "I am excited about the launch of a book I spent
more than a decade writing. My research into Filipino Louisiana
started as a way to understand my family’s Filipino story. I
learned that without the fishermen at St. Malo, the shrimpers at
Manila Village, and the seamen who settled in New Orleans, my
Filipino ancestors may not have moved to Louisiana.<a name='more'></a>
Poetry — attention to sound, rhythm, and the emotional register of
words — helped me organize and make sense of research and make it
meaningful to me" (<a href="https://randygonzales.com/poet/" target="_blank">Gonzales</a>). "I am a native New Orleanian of Filipino
descent; a poet, writer, and community historian who researches
and shares the stories of Filipino Louisiana; a scholar and
educator, an associate professor of English at the <a href="https://english.louisiana.edu/node/192" moz-do-not-send="true">University of
Louisiana at Lafayette</a> who holds the Dr. James
Wilson/BORSF Eminent Scholar Endowed Professorship in Southern

celebration of Twelfth Night. Jan. 6th marks the Feast of the
Epiphany, when the Three Wise Men visited the Christ child. In
New Orleans it also means the launch of Carnival season. And
New Orleans observes it with the Joan of Arc parade that
marches through the Quarter. Société Des Champs Elysée rolls

Meanwhile Uptown, the Phunny Phorty Phellows board the St.

"Steamboats shaped America’s future, its economy, and its
culture while expanding trade and expanding the country’s
footprint into new territories.<a name='more'></a> This economic expansion was not
limited to New Orleans, but also to Cincinnati, St. Louis,
Pittsburgh, Memphis, Louisville, Nashville, St. Paul, Kansas
City, and Chattanooga. A round trip voyage from Pittsburgh to
New Orleans that once took six months could now be accomplished
in forty-five days. At the same time steamboats made it possible
to circulate and disseminate the news and the mail, to spread
the various immigrant cultures, food, and music. New Orleans
Steamboat Stories contains stories of a handful of the different
steamboats and the people who lived and worked on the Western
rivers. They are brief in nature as the average life of a
steamboat was generally short. But their impact culturally and
commercially, esthetically and economically, made a lasting
impact on the development of America" (<a href="https://www.jeffparish.net/press-releases/derby-gisclair-to-discuss-new-book-about-mississippi-riverboats-at-east-bank-regional-library/11-13-yyyy#:~:text=Steamboats%20shaped%20America's%20future%2C%20its,%2C%20Louisville%2C%20Nashville%2C%20St." target="_blank">Jefferson Parish</a>).</div>

New Year's Eve in New Orleans<br />
<a href="https://www.neworleans.com/events/holidays-seasonal/new-years-eve/" moz-do-not-send="true">Website</a><br />
New Orleans is the perfect place to ring in the new year.
Whether you want to grab dinner and turn in for the night
early, celebrate at a children’s event during the day, or
party all night long, we’ve got something for everyone. Here’s
how to celebrate New Year’s Eve in New Orleans.<br />
For the biggest party in the city,
head to Jackson Square – the Quarter is packed with festive
partygoers eager to countdown the time until the New Year
arrives with the Fleur De Lis drop. <br />
If outdoor celebrations and big
crowds are not for you, make a reservation at one of the
city’s many fine restaurants and celebrate the evening over
delectable meals and of course, lots of bubbly. Many
restaurants offer special deals or packages for the evening,
so make sure you check ahead to ensure the perfect night for
you, your loved ones and friends. See <a href="https://www.neworleans.com/events/holidays-seasonal/christmas/restaurants-open-for-the-holidays/" moz-do-not-send="true">here</a>
for our list of restaurants open for New Year’s Eve.<br />
Experience New Year's Eve like never
before at Vue Orleans atop the Four Seasons Hotel New Orleans.
This year, join the party 34 floors above the Mississippi
River for a fireworks display to remember. Vue Orleans offers
unmatched bird’s-eye views of the New Orleans fireworks, adult
beverages, light passed appetizers, DJ music, and a champagne
toast at midnight. The celebration begins at 10 p.m. Tickets
are limited, must be 21 to purchase and attend.<br />

Louisiana Purchase Territory. Since 1927, we are home to one
of the oldest community-based holiday celebrations in the
country. Starting as a one-day festival, the Natchitoches
Christmas Festival has evolved into a six-week long Christmas
Season. The Christmas Season begins on the Saturday before
Thanksgiving and concludes on January the 6th, the Epiphany.
Over 300,000 lights and 100 plus set pieces are on display
every night at dusk.<br />

Alison Pelegrin, Poet Laureate <div>549. This week we're happy to <a href="http://archive.org/download/549-alison-pelegrin/549--Alison_Pelegrin.mp3" target="_blank">have</a> Louisiana's current poet laureate Alison Pelegrin visiting us. 'Alison was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. She received an MFA from the University of Arkansas. Pelegrin is the author of <i>Waterlines</i> (Louisiana State University Press, 2016); <i>Hurricane Party</i> (University of Akron Press, 2012); <i>Big Muddy River of Stars</i> (University of Akron Press, 2007), which received the 2006 Akron Poetry Prize; and<i> The Zydeco Tablets</i> (Word Press, 2002). <a name='more'></a>About Pelegrin’s poetry, Martha Serpas writes, “Alison Pelegrin is one of the sharpest wits to come out of the Bayou State in a long time. She can conjure Louisiana’s present-tense, unapologetic, tragicomic drama with authenticity.” She teaches at Southeastern Louisiana University and lives in Covington, Louisiana. In 2023, she was appointed the poet laureate of Louisiana through 2025' (<a href="https://poets.org/poet/alison-pelegrin">Poets.org</a>).</div>

<li>This week in New Orleans history. Royal Street Branch
Library Opens<br />
November 25, 1907. The Royal Branch at 2110 Royal Street
(Royal at Frenchmen), funded by a grant from Andrew Carnegie,
was the first NOPL branch to open, on November 25, 1907. Two
other branches, Algiers and Napoleon, also built with Carnegie
funds, opened shortly afterward and continue to serve the
public today. The Royal Branch was a one-story and basement
structure of the Doric style of architecture. It was
fire-proof, the exterior and interior walls being of pressed
brick and the floors of concrete. It occupied a lot 65 by 98
feet, and sat upon a low terrace. The interior space was
divided into reading, attendants', janitor's, storage and
toilet rooms. The reading-room was 40 by 50 feet with a
ceiling height of sixteen feet which had no interior columns
or other obstructions — giving the impression of an even
larger room. <br />

Isabelle Jacopin<div>547. This week to <a href="http://archive.org/download/547-isabelle-jacopin/547--Isabelle_Jacopin.mp3" target="_blank">caught up</a> with Isabelle Jacopin, an <i>artiste peintre </i>born in France, who has been drawn to the world of art since her early childhood. In 1998, her artistic path led her to New Orleans, where she delved into pastel painting, using the vibrant city as her muse. She sketched the lively streets, vibrant clubs, and distinctive elements that make New Orleans so unique. <a name='more'></a>In 2004, Isabelle transitioned to oil painting on linen canvas, a medium that has held her fascination ever since. Robin Roberts<div>546. We <a href="http://archive.org/download/546-robin-roberts/546--Robin_Roberts.mp3" target="_blank">interview</a> Robin Roberts about her new book, <i><a href="https://lsupress.org/9780807180266/city-of-the-undead/" target="_blank">City of the Undead</a></i>. "From its looming above-ground cemeteries to the ghosts believed to haunt its stately homes, New Orleans is a city deeply entwined with death, the undead, and the supernatural.<a name='more'></a> Its location near the mouth of the Mississippi River grants it a liminal status between water and land, while its Old World architecture and lush, moss-covered oak trees lend it an eerie beauty. Complementing the city’s mysterious landscape, spiritual beliefs and practices from Native American, African, African American, Caribbean, and European cultures mingle in a unique ferment of the paranormal. A long history of enslavement and oppression have also produced fertile soil for stories of the undead. Focusing on three manifestations of the supernatural in New Orleans — Voodoo, ghosts, and vampires — Robin Roberts argues that the paranormal gives voice to the voiceless, including victims of racism and oppression, thus encouraging the living not to repeat the injustices of the past. Robin Roberts attended Mount Holyoke College, where the presence of its founder’s grave in the center of campus kindled her interest in the otherworldly. After receiving her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, she taught undergraduate and graduate courses with a focus on popular culture and gender. She lives in New Orleans." "Walt Whitman’s short stint in New Orleans during the spring of 1848 was a crucial moment of literary and personal development, with many celebrated poems from Leaves of Grass showing its influence. <a name='more'></a> Walt Whitman’s New Orleans is the first book dedicated to republishing his writings about the Crescent City, including numerous previously unknown pieces. Often spending his afternoons strolling through the vibrant city with his brother in tow, the young Whitman translated his impressions into short prose sketches that cataloged curious sights, captured typical characters one might meet on the levee, and joked about the strangeness of urban life.... Louisiana River Road – All-American Road<br />
Distance: 773 miles<br />
Website<br />
Duration: One to two days for a self-guided tour of each area<br />
Side by side and decade after decade the Mississippi River and
the Great River Road bring more people together with their
history, culture and natural worlds than any other North
American river and treasured road. The river and road have
shaped the people and the land in this place.<br />
Entering into Louisiana across the Mississippi River from
Vicksburg, a visitor will see traces of Grant’s Canal, dating
to the American Civil War. During the historic
siege of Vicksburg, General U. S. Grant tried to divert the
Mississippi River by cutting a canal at Lake Providence and
using the bayous and rivers to bypass Vicksburg. His
attempt failed and it is the only time in military history a
tactic such as this was employed.<br />

"The humble history of the drive-thru daiquiri dates back to 1981, when David Ervin first opened the Daiquiri Factory in Lafayette, Lousiana. Ervin got the idea from a liquor store he frequented during his college days, which had a frozen drink stand on the side.<a name='more'></a> He saw that model's success and thought he could take it a step further by replicating just the frozen drinks part of the equation. He wasn't sure about the legal status, though, and so he did some investigating to see if there was a precedent so he'd know if his business could withstand legal scrutiny. But Ervin couldn't find anyone else who'd tried, and he couldn't afford to pay someone to figure it out for him. As he put it in NOLA, 'It was the first business in the nation dedicated to specializing in frozen cocktails, drive-thru or otherwise'" (<a href="https://www.mashed.com/1339051/origin-story-new-orleans-drive-thru-daiquiri/" target="_blank">Mashed.com</a>).</div>

<li>This week in Louisiana. Steamboat Washington Arrives in New
Orleans<br />
October 7, 1816. Commemorative Stamp Issued March 3, 1989.
Watercolor by Richard Schlecht. On October 7, 1816 the
Washington, built by Henry M. Shreve, was the first
double-decker. steamboat to arrive in New Orleans and became
the model for the classic style of Mississippi river boats --
flat-bottomed, two stories, steam-powered paddle wheel mounted
on the stern, two smoke-stacks. First used to carry cargo it
was soon open for passenger transportation. The Washington
moved at lightning speed compared to other boats on the rivers
-- 16 mph upstream and downstream at as much as 25 mph. Shreve
launched the boat earlier that year on the Monongahela River
just above Pittsburgh. Shreve's cleverly designed Washington
had all the features that would soon come to characterize the
classic Mississippi riverboat: a two-story deck, a
stern-mounted paddle wheel powered by a high-pressure steam
engine, a shallow, flat-bottomed hull, and a pilothouse framed
by two tall chimneys. Perfectly designed for the often-shallow
western rivers like the Mississippi and Missouri, the
Washington proved itself on its inaugural voyage the following
spring. Steaming upriver against the current with full cargo,
the Washington reached Louisville in only 25 days,
demonstrating that the powerful new generation of steamboats
could master the often-treacherous currents of the mighty
western rivers. Soon the Washington began to offer regular
passenger and cargo service between New Orleans and
Louisville. <br />

541. We <a href="http://archive.org/download/541-audrey-gibson/541--Audrey_Gibson.mp3" target="_blank">talk</a> to Audrey Gibson about her book, <i>Tempêtes et Éclairs</i>, a collection of Louisiana French poetry by Adolphe Duhart. "'Duhart, a Louisiana Creole who wrote poetry in French for the first Black daily newspaper in the United States. Duhart, who lived in New Orleans, was also a teacher in the 1850s and fought in the Civil War.<a name='more'></a> All of Duhart's poetry was meant to inspire, elevate, and humanize those for whom he wrote,' explained Dr. Dana Kress, professor of French at Centenary and editor in chief of<i> Les Éditions Tintamarre</i>. 'Some of his poems are about family, and his public had sometimes never seen families like their own celebrated in verse in writing. Others are powerful social commentaries such as the poem about Lincoln's assassination, published on April 25,1865, in New Orleans; these works elicit a powerful emotional response but also stand as a monument to Duhart's courage for daring to speak out publicly in a major Confederate city.'" </div><div> “'I approached Dr. Kress during my first year at Centenary and asked him for ideas on how to get involved in research,” recalled Gibson. “He told me about Adolphe Duhart, a prolific Afro-Creole writer from New Orleans, whose poetry had never been fully collected into a book. He said that this could be a great project for me to work on'" (<a href="https://www.centenary.edu/news-media/story/centenary-s-editions-tintamarre-publishes-historic-collection-from-creole-poet/" target="_blank">Centenary</a>). <i> Les Éditions Tintamarre </i>is not only producing a great collection of lost French language Louisiana literature, the project is training the next generation of scholars who will study that literature.<br /></div>
