16. We
discuss the 1825-1826 visit to America of Carl Bernhard, Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. Bernhard, a hero of the Battle of Waterloo, was a Prussian officer who fought with the British against Napoleon. As a popular, powerful aristocrat, Bernhard was given the red carpet treatment throughout his travels. We discuss his adventures in New Orleans, Louisiana, and on the Mississippi River, and his observations of the early American republic. He was a keen observer of life in general, and the military in particular. The hero of Waterloo gives a vivid account of the Battle of New Orleans, possibly the first one many in his original European audience had read.
