477½. This is a special political episode where we talk to
Peyton Michelle. On July 12, 2020, Peyton became the first
openly transgender woman to win political office in Louisiana,
as Big Easy Magazine was the first to report. Her seat on the
Democratic State Central Committee isn’t technically a public
office, but it will allow her to help shape party policy. She
did also have to win election in the 46th District, a rural
and conservative area outside of Lafayette. At an age when
many transgender people of previous generations weren’t even
able to be out of the closet, the 22-year-old serves on the
board of Louisiana Trans Advocates and the board of PFLAG
Lafayette — all while working toward a political science
degree and doing digital marketing at her day job.
